Will the Xbox 360 get MGS4?

By Andrew Shin

With E3 just around the corner, there has been tremendous buzz surrounding Microsoft's BIG announcement for the event. One specific speculation has been the possibility of a port of the highly successful and critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 4.

In fact, a mysterious new Twitterer going by the name Game Fork has been tweeting quite a bit about "MGS+O" (Metal Gear Solid + Oxide) and even confirming it will be announced at E3. While we all love to speculate about potential announcements at E3, it's important to stay grounded and really think about what is truly plausible. That said, the possibility of MGS4 coming to the 360 seems doubtful to me. In Metal Gear Solid 4, Hideo Kojima designed a game that was tailored to utilze and take advantage of the PS3's powerful hardware and capabilities.

It would seem highly unlikely that Kojima would tinker in anyway with MGS4 in order to have it play on the Xbox 360. Well, at least that's my take on it. But let's turn it over to you, our loyal readers. What's your take on this? Will the Xbox 360 get MGS4? Vote now and discuss!

I fukin hope not...

Yes, it will.

Fanboys are clinging on, hoping that the 360 doesn't get it, claiming that the 360 doesn't have the hardware capabilities to do it. This is complete BS. There is no game (aside from maybe CoD4 or Oblivion) that has better graphics on the PS3.

The only real problem posed is that the game may need 4 or 5 DVDs...but it's not really a problem.

haha u know when otakan says in the game that u had to change disk he was only joking in the ps3 version but if it comes out on the 360 it wont be a joke! lol

this is the most stupid post about MGS4

"take advantage of the PS3's powerful hardware and capabilities"

For christ sake, the game is too big for dvd9 cuz it has uncompressed textures, so it depended on BlueRay to hold the data. This doesnt have anything to do with hardware capabilities, this is more like a fanboy crying cuz the possibility of MGS4 coming to 360.

a quick note also, IBM Cpu designer who worked in PS3cpu and 360cpu, has said both cpu are identical in terms of performance, and for every ps3 fan reading take a look into PS3 GPU specification and comapre them to 360 GPU, PS3 GPU is inferior, ATI(amd now) made the statement.

The only superior thing ps3 has(and is a great advantage) is storage capacity(BLUE RAY)

I would definitely say that the above statement is incorrect. Specs show that the PS3's Cell processor is more powerful than the Xbox 360 Xenon processor. The only knock against the PS3's Cell processor has been that it is more difficult to develop games that could harness all of the Cell processor's power and thus requires more time for development.

With Metal Gear Solid 4, Kojima himself stated that his focus was to create elements within the game that would utilize the PS3's processing capabilities.

Chalking up the difference between the 360 and PS3 as only being media capacity is absurd.

Just because one of the designers of the 360 and PS3 cpus said they were comparable in performance (not identical), doesn't necessarily mean it's true. He might have just been saying that to be political, so as to take sides or burn any bridges.

I mean, the proof has been in the pudding for a very long time. Despite the 360's slight GPU performance advantage, PS3 exclusive titles (Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, etc.) are noticeably superior on a technical basis to what the 360's best exclusives have to offer (Gears of War 2). The 360's triple-core PowerPC might have an advantage as a general purpose cpu, but the Cell has enormous performance potential for heavy-duty, specialized processing tasks, such as game logic, physics, and rendering. There's a reason Universities and research facilities string up a dozen PS3s together to form an ad-hoc Supercomputer to do their data-intensive calculations.

OMG GUYS JUST STFU! It's not going on the 360 any time soon! GOD DAMMIT JUST STFU!!!!!!!!

have you even seen the PS3's SDK?
"harness" are you kidding me? HAHAH You're one of those many idiots that doesn't understand anything about computer programming fundamentals, and actual architecture of this CPU talking bullshit to many people.

You can't just create performance out of no where.

micromanagement on the PS3's cpu is crucial because of its SPEs, since mainstream engine creators base their engines on an engine they started (such as Source engine, Unreal 1,2,3) they don't change their style of coding, while Killzone 2, etc has a brand new engine to code for, hence creating an engine that's fit for the hardware.

you can't just harness power from nowhere. it's 2 TeraFLOPs... That's it, it's just horribly used. Bloated seem to speak.

I own a ps3, only system i like. but your statement is idiotic

No way MGS 4 come to xbox 360 be cause Kojima said MGS4 too big for 50 GB Blu-ray disc and they delete some things to make fit in blu-ray disc If MGS 4 will come to xbox 360 i think every level in disc lol I'd imagine a good deal of that has to be cinematics, uncompressed audio and the like.
How could Konami even fathom putting this on a DVD?

Anonymous said...

Kojima Production already said recently that "Sadly we are not working on MGS4 on 360 yet" which probably means that if you are going to speculate MGS4 on 360 don't speculate at this time.

Second this Game-fork dude he has the same credibility as most other rumor makers like skater boy, silogon and surfer girl.

Me personally I don't care if MGS4 does come to the 360, I've already finished it multiple times and hey my inner fanboy can finally be the one that calls the other version to be sloppy seconds something that I've experienced within the Bioshock forums in other sites.

IBM engineer stated CPU for PS3/360 are equal
ATI(AMD)stated 360 GPU is fater than ps3 GPU, which is 12% faster and have better gfx support.

all are facts. The difference is software only that

Anonymous said...

Who can blame them? 360 owners want MGS4 more than PS3 owners want Gears Of War & Halo combined.

Anonymous said...

It also seemed impossible that FFXIII was gonna come to the xbox.....

Anonymous said...

"IBM Cpu designer who worked in PS3cpu and 360cpu, has said both CPU are identical in terms of performance"

That's the CPU ONLY. Cell has the original Power Processing Unit, along with the 8 SPE's with normal hyper threading.

Xenon has 3 PPU's dual threaded.

The PPU's are identical, but the whole package is different. Don't talk about tech if you don't know it.

OMFG guys let it go for christs sake.
if the boss of the compan(hideo) says it aint gona happen guess what
IT AINT GONA HAPPEN.
get over it jesus christ ive never seen something people just refuse to let go off.
plus it uses all 50GB of disk so how many disks would it need for the 360, plus how many sony and apple products are in the game you seriously think konami are going to waste there time going through and removing all that stuff.
seriously just drop it.

Anonymous said...

who wants this game anyway. its a pretty boring piece of crap...cmon who's gonna pay 60 bucks for a movie with barely a few gameplays? this crap game can stay with ps3 for all i care. lol

Anonymous said...

Konami gave a statement a few days ago saying that they werent working on the 360 version. So if it does come to 360, dont expect it anytime soon.
I have noticed something though. 360 fanboys seem to hate mgs4 because of big cutscenes and stealth gameplay etc. But as soon as they hear is coming to 360, they want it really bad. Make your mind up guys, you probably havent even played it and you cant decide if you like it or not. LOL

Anonymous said...

and seriously do you believe ATI they said there video card is faster than the RSX in the ps3.
why doesent that suprise me. well mayb its because Nvidia made the RSX so of corse there going to say that its there comp.
and just because they say it does not mean its true.
M$ jappan recently said that ps3 title sales are "lacking" but is that true?
no agreed some titles could have sold better but that does not mean they sold poorly.
and i think one of the reasons is sony does not know how to market there games, for example last night i went to the movies to see star treck saw a 360 add b4 the movie saw a nintendo add b4 the movie no sony add.
in fact ive NEVER seen a sony add at the movies and the only sony add ive ever seen is the stupid singstar add on TV.
seriously stuff singstar whos going to spend $400 on a ps3 just so you can realise how bad of a singer you are.

Anonymous said...

I dont care if they do eventually make a crappy port for a game that was designed specifically for the PS3. I dont think its worth the effort essentially redesigning the game when they could work on another game. Besides...all the people who really wanted to play it were probably smart and played it already, its only the retarded xbox fanboys that are so devouted to their system that they wouldnt play it on the other system...This is off-topic but this also applies to idiots who arent going to play ff13 since its now multiplat..

Anonymous said...

What is up with Microsoft? Instead taking of taking ps3 exclusives and bribing the fuck out of developers they should bloody make their own games.

Anonymous said...

If this is true, I will lose a lot of respect for the ps3.

Anonymous said...

Kojimas already said mgs4 isnt coming yesterday...

Anonymous said...

it won't, kojima said it won't. but the next mgs game will probably make an appearance on 360 methinks, more a matter of reaching a wider audience than anything.

money talks gentlemen.

We will see MGS4 on the Xbox 360 eventually, for sure.

Maybe even this year

Anonymous said...

as much as I'd love to see mg4 come to my 360, I don't think it will ever EVER happen. Kojima has been pretty insistent that it was made for the ps3 and only the ps3, and that he has no desire the water down his game the make it run on the 360. I think we'll see some form of an MG game on the 360 some time in the future, but I don't think it will be mgs4. I'd rather like to see a Zone of the Enders 3 myself.

I dont think so just for the fact that hideo specicaly saied. That he perfered the ps3 over the 360. Also the game was made to untlize the ps3`s power. Yes it can be done but of course it would have to be ported and they would have to do a hold new stage of programing for it since the the model of the game is ment for the ps3. But people dont forget the only and last mgs game we ever saw on microsoft`s console was MGS 2 substance now this is where another fact comes in did you all forget that usually hideo releases a updated verison of his MGS games after a yr or so. This also i think is a high possiblity something that would includeing new extra things and all the DLC so far released possibley the new content also. Im no fanboy i do own both consoles and MGS 4 im just saying that this rumor has been going around since MGS 4 was completed. I think hideo would of announced it by now if it was in production. I think also sony would be paying him and his company alot of money to keep that game exclusive at least thats what i would do so my company sells more consoles.

pwned_killer89 said...

You just gotta face it and come to facts i honestly think its not gonna make it to the 360. But mgs 5 i think would have a good chance at being multiplatform.

FF13 on Xbox360=NO WAY!
DMC4 on Xbox360=NO WAY!
Ace combat 6 on Xbox360=NO WAY!
Grand theft auto in Xbox360=NO WAY!
While I am not saying that their is conclusive proof that MGS4 is coming to the Xbox 360, I am saying that fanboys have a habit of strongly opposing speculation that does not coincide with their vision of the future.

Anonymous said...

the only real suprise was ff13 on xbox 360
GTAIV was always going to be multiplatform
DMC4 was never a playstation exclusive? i think i saw it on pc and even nintendo. but i know they were many versions

Ace combat?? im sure it will be released evntually for the ps3 but anyways if you think about it microsoft is the loser, instead of developing their own games, they are paying for games , game by game. They are just throwing money away an its not like ps3 is losing much! the games are still coming to ps3. Its a little sad that ms has to throw money, and the ps3 still gets the game without having to throw pay checks everywhere. MS is clearly not focused on the future. By buying games, it means they have to keep buying them! it will be cheaper if they develop and create own sequels without paying premiums. Bioshock is now multiplat project gotham gone, rare and bungie are starting to go multiplatform i dont think ms can continue to throw away money to cock block Sony. They need a proper strategy.

Were in on God’s green earth do you guys get your facts?!? I am blown away by the fact that many of you fan boys are quoting tabloid internet journalism as Gospel. You guys need stop and think about the source of information that your are quote.
To set the record straight Dr.Peter Hofstee (lead designer for both the Cell and Xenon) was quoted saying that both CPU “use the same instruction set”. This was spun by some tabloid internet journalist looking for a flame bait title to “both CPU are identical in terms of performance”.
As well ATI/AMD has never gone on to state that “360 GPU is fater than ps3 GPU”. This was again another misquote.
You fan boys need to start getting better source. Below are the technical comparisons of the GPU and CPU on both systems. The information was taken from wikipedia.org

The thing with MGS games is that they're usually built ground up for the PlayStation architecture. The original PlayStation's simplicity made a Windows port possible. As for the Xbox version of Sons of Liberty, the port was inferior since it wasn't optimised. Either way, it still worked. MGS3 was probably the most system-specific of the lot since KCEJ dropped the MGS2 engine and built an entirely new one, more organic, more sprawling.

The thing with MGS4 is that it's built for the PowerPC architecture (as opposed to MGS2/3 being built for the proprietary vector processing units of the PS2) which both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 possess. As such, it would be easier to port the game than what more uninformed people seem to suggest. I would surmise, given the calibre of the upcoming Uncharted 2 that MGS4 wasn't using the full processing grunt of the PS3. As such, perhaps a KP game two/three years from now will really set new standards but MGS4's will be broken as it was with MGS2.

As, I believe that it is quite possible (bar optical media issues) for MGS4 to be ported to the Xbox 360. Compressing the audio would probably make a huge difference in terms of saving on disc space.

The thing is, I don't think that Konami will be announcing a port of MGS4. Why? Well, for starters, it's doing well enough on the PS3 on its own terms. Secondly, Kojima himself feels that it should remain on the PS3. Thirdly, I'm sure that SCEJ made some financial deal. I mean, why wouldn't they, right? It's the way the world works, my lovely fanboys.

It will never happen. This is obvious to any idiot. In fact, anyone that says it will happen or even that it's possible after 4 fucking years of being shut down and ass raped by Kojima's "it's never coming" comments deserves to be shot.

On the other side we have MS losing Mass Effect as exclusive (I look forward to the PS3 versions, those are definitely coming), Tales of Vesperia, Ninja Gaiden 2 (a game MS published - nothing is safe in Microsoft land) - how was the beta trial Xbots? Was it fun. Thanks, I'll enjoy the finished version of NG2 exclusively on PS3. Star Ocean 4 is coming, a better version of Katamari only on PS3.

Man, MS is bleeding exclusives.

As for the other part of your post, damn you sound like you are on some great crusade to purge the world of Microsoft. Personally I just enjoy playing video games and not giving a damn if someone a few hundred kilometers away from me is enjoying one of my favorite games on another system.

You know how many Sony references the game has in it?

- Both Vamp and Naomi are rocking Sony Ericsson cell phones.

- At a point in Act 4, Octacon tells you to swap your disc for disc 2 to continue the game since your playing on a Sony Playstation One. And Snake reminds him that your playing on Sony Playstation 3 that has blueray, and it dosen't need disc swap.

- Sunny owns a PsP, and is even shown playing it in the game.

- Not a Sony product, but still a direct competior of Msoft. Snake uses an Apple iPOD to play music throughout his missons.

So i doubt the game will be on the xbox. Msoft wouldn't want their competitors getting free advertisement on their console. And MGS4 has soo much quality in it, that the game would have to be spanned over 3-5 dvd discs, just like Octacon was saying in the game in reference to the PSone. Matter of fact, I wouldn't be suprised if every Act had to use its own cd.

The 360 version will be superior to the ps3.

The reason... The Xbox 360 hardware is superior. Speak to ANY developer working on both, and if they're honest (which most are not because they will recieve a whole heap of preasure from sony), the answer will always be... The Xbox360 is the superior machine.

The ps3 is a real pain to work with, and trying to milk performance out of it a real task... FULL STOP

The Xbox360 will get MGS4(+) which will be a superior version to the ps3.

Anonymous said...

well your wrong. the cell chip is a better and more original architecture for the future. The ps3 has never been hacked yet while the 360 was hacked after a week of it been on the shelves. The ps3 can handle physics in games better and because of its many spu's, it can handle more things at once. The 360 has the edge on graphics though but overall, the ps3 has the better cpu. The controller on the ps3 has a long-term rechargeable battery unlike the awkward rechargeable battery that the 360 has. The ps3 also doesn't suffer from hardware failures such as the 360's rrod. In terms of performance, both consoles are nearly on par but if the ps3 is used to its full potential, it has the edge. MGS4 used it to its full potential and thus it won't be as good on 360 if it comes to it but it won't be far off either.

"MGS4 used it to its full potential" you my friend are stupid. if thats the case, have you seen the trailer for uncharted 2? what about killzone 2? will xbox get a taste of mgs4? yes it think so. in this economy, konami needs to make up their production costs, and a wide audience such as the xbox 360 would make perfect sense.
