By Paul Hunter
Following weeks of rumours and speculations, the PlayStation 5 Pro is real and has finally arrived on store shelves. Released on November 7, 2024, this mid-generation console from Sony aims to elevate your gaming experience to new heights with beefier specs and new tech. Following the success of the original PlayStation 5, which launched in late 2020, the PS5 Pro is designed to enhance performance while maintaining compatibility with your existing PS5 library of games.
The PS5 Pro is a response to the growing demand for more powerful gaming hardware. This gen we've frequently have to choose between 60fps, 1080p Performance mode or 30fps, 4K Fidelity mode. PS5 Pro was designed to get the best of both modes with games targeting 60fps, 4K or 30fps with improved ray tracing and other visual enhancements.
In this review, we will explore the technical specifications, performance improvements, and overall gaming experience that the PS5 Pro has to offer. Get ready to find out if this console is worth the investment and how it compares to the base PS5 console. Let’s dive in!
The PlayStation 5 Pro is a remarkable upgrade that brings significant improvements to PS5 Pro Enhanced games. At its core, the PS5 Pro features a powerful GPU that delivers an impressive 16.7 TFLOPS, a substantial increase from the original PS5's 10.2 TFLOPS. This boost in performance allows for stunning graphics and smoother gameplay, making your gaming sessions more immersive than ever.
One of the standout features of the PS5 Pro is its focus on improving ray tracing. This technology enhances lighting and reflections in games, creating a more realistic environment. With the PS5 Pro, you can expect games to look more vibrant and lifelike, drawing you deeper into their narratives. Titles like Alan Wake 2 and Assassin’s Creed Mirage showcase these improvements, allowing you to appreciate the intricate details in their worlds.
The console also comes with 2TB of storage, which is double the capacity of the original PS5. This expanded storage is essential for gamers who have a large library of digital titles. With the PS5 Pro, you can install more games without worrying about running out of space, allowing for quick access whenever you want to dive back into a game.
Another notable feature is the PlayStation Super Sampling Resolution (PSSR). This technology allows older PS4 games and PS5 games to benefit from enhanced graphics when played on the PS5 Pro. You can enjoy improved visuals and performance in titles that may not have received dedicated updates. This means that even your classic favourites will look and feel better, giving you the best version of each title.
The PS5 Pro also boasts improved cooling systems, like a taller fan and additional heat pipes, ensuring that the console runs efficiently during long gaming sessions. This means you can play for hours without worrying about overheating or excessive noise.
The PlayStation 5 Pro has a striking design that combines elements from both the original PS5 and the PS5 Slim, creating a unique aesthetic. The console is slightly taller and wider than the Slim model, and it features three distinct black lines between the side panels. This design element adds depth and character to the console, making it stand out even more. The PS5 Pro looks great whether you place it horizontally or vertically (vertical stand sold separately), fitting seamlessly into your entertainment area.
The console's colour scheme remains consistent with the PS5 family, featuring a glossy white exterior with black accents. The materials used in the construction feel premium, making it a stylish addition to your gaming shelf. In terms of functionality, the PS5 Pro's design includes removable side panels, allowing for easy cleaning or adding an optional SSD for more memory. However, it’s important to note that the panels are not interchangeable with the Slim model, so if you bought custom Slim panels they won't fit on the PS5 Pro.
I spent the past week playing numerous titles that are PS5 Pro Enhanced, offering significant enhancements to game performance and fidelity. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 features improved ray tracing, making the vibrant city of New York come to life with breathtaking details. Horizon Forbidden West looks incredible on the base PS5 but on PS5 Pro the improved graphics make the lush environments even more striking. God of War Ragnarök gets improved frame rates and visual fidelity on the PS5 Pro, making every encounter with Norse gods and monsters even more exciting. Final Fantasy VII Remake has the biggest upgrade in my view, providing a significant visual upgrades that makes the world of Midgar even more stunning.
In addition to these titles, Demon’s Souls showcases the PS5 Pro's ability to enhance older games. The remake of this classic title runs smoother and looks sharper on the new console. The dark and atmospheric world of Boletaria feels even more immersive, allowing you to fully appreciate the haunting visuals and intricate level design.
Moreover, the PS5 Pro already supports up to 120fps in dozens of games. Games like Ghostwire: Tokyo, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III take full advantage of the improve frame rates for smoother gameplay and a more fluid gaming experience.
Final Score: 9/10 - Amazing
