Haze Experience - Is This The Best Game Promo Site Yet?

Ubisoft has launched an exciting new promotional site for their upcoming first-person shooter game Haze. Dubbed the "Experience Site", the interactive flash website lets gamers experience life as a Mantel soldier through hi-res video clips and two interactive shooting games.

Fantasy RPG + Heavy Metal = Fun^2

Time to turn up the volume to 11 Xbox 360 and PC fans!

cdv Software Entertainment USA and Ascaron Entertainment GmbH today announced that their upcoming Action-RPG, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, will feature a brand-new fantasy heavy metal-themed song “Sacred,” penned and performed exclusively for the game by renowned German heavy metal group Blind Guardian. Über fans of Blind Guardian will also be excited to hear that the band will make a guest appearance in-game once the player solves a special side quest. The game is scheduled for release in September 2008.

360 Voice GTA IV stats

360 Voice is reporting that 30% of their members played GTA IV in the first 24 hours of release.

Other interesting facts:
  • The second biggest day for a game ever, beaten only by Halo 3 launch which had about 5600 more players.
  • Call of Duty lost about 40% of it's gamers for the day
  • Halo 3 which saw a similar 37% drop in players

Playstation Store | Canadian Price Adjustments

Today Playstation's Blog let its Canadian user base know of a price adjustment that brings the Playstation store prices in line with the Current Exchange rate.

Quoted from PLAYSTATION Store price parity for Canadian consumers:
I am excited to let all of our Canadian gamers know that we will be adjusting prices for downloadable content available through the PLAYSTATION Store for the Canadian market as a result of the strengthening Canadian currency vs. the US dollar.
Prices are expected to be fully updated tomorrow (May 1, 2008).

Final Fantasy IV NA Site Goes Live, Still Spoony

I've decided to come clean and admit something that I've hidden away for over 15 years. Back in the winter of 1991, I had my very first real emotional reponse while playing a video game. The game of course was Final Fantasy II for the Super Nintendo (later dubbed Final Fantasy IV to harmonize the sequence with the Japanese releases). I remember it well, and while I want to tell you the whole story, I'm afraid doing so would be a major spoiler to uninitiated. Needless to say, Final Fantasy IV is a must-play gaming experience if you enjoy JRPGs. Fortunately, Square Enix is localizing FF IV for the Nintendo DS and should be arriving on North America store shelves on July 22nd.

Metal Gear Online - Man Cannon Video

I have to admit, Metal Gear Online looks like a lot of fun. Multi-player tactical shooting set in the Metal Gear world sounds like a winning combination to me. The thing I'm looking forward to the most though, has to be the man cannons. Vertical Accelerator Pads have never looked so tempting.

Video Games Giving Hollywood The Big Boot

Move over Tony Stark, there's a new protagonist in town and his name is Niko Bellic. In a few short hours, millions of gamers will have their hands on the hottest piece of video game real estate on the market - namely Grand Theft Auto IV. According to analysts, GTA IV could sell more than six million copies during its first week at retail, netting a whopping $400-million (U.S.) in revenue for Take Two Interactive.

This news has many of the big wigs at Paramount Pictures concerned that the game could put a damper on Iron Man's box office debut on May 2nd. In an article posted on the Canada.com, Victor Lucas, host and producer of TV's Electric Playground says that "this will be the first major release in what is considered Hollywood's summer movie period, and if there's any title that could put a dent in box office for a major movie, it's Grand Theft Auto."

But this isn't the first time Hollywood has felt uneasy as a result of a major video game launch. Last fall, Dreamworks blamed disappointing opening weekend of The Heartbreak Kid on the launch of Halo 3 for the Xbox 360. The game generated over $300 million in its first week - doubling that of Spiderman 3's $150 million opening weekend. Half a year later, at the 2008 Game Developer's Conference, Microsoft's keynote address proudly proclaimed that video games are "bigger than Movies, Music and YouTube."

Without a doubt, gaming is becoming big business. If dollars dictate consumer preferences, then it's clear that video games have become the entertainment medium of choice for the 21st century. Given this, it sure will be interesting to see how Iron Man fairs at the box office this week.

Update: Limited, Limited Edition GTA IV Xbox 360 Elites

As mentioned last week, Best Buy Canada is celebrating the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV in a BIG way on Monday night. By far the most enticing draw to this event is the chance to win a GTA IV branded Xbox 360 Elite console. To further whet our appetites, an ad for the event recently showed up on the Xbox.com website, containing photos of this insatiably sweet looking Limited Edition Xbox 360. And by limited edition, I don't mean Halo 3 limited edition (that ironically, can still be found on some shelves), I mean limited as in 5 consoles were produced in all of Canada. Apparently there are no plans to sell GTA IV Xbox 360's at retail - meaning this will be your only chance to get your hands on one of these bad boys.

IGN: GTA IV 'Looks Better' On PS3

According to IGN's recent review of GTA IV:
"For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud."
So is IGN suggesting that people should opt buy the PS3 version? Not quite. The article continues:
"If you're wondering which version to buy, the best suggestion is to consider what your friends will purchase. That's because online multiplayer has made its way into GTA IV and it is awesome. And, like all great things, it's best played when drunk and with as many friends as possible."
So there you have it folks - buy the version your friends are purchasing. Makes sense to me.

Microsoft: Xbox 360 Is 'The Chosen Place To Play GTA IV'

As we move closer to the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV, the big question seems to be which console will host the better version. According to Microsoft's March NPD statement, that answer is of course, the Xbox 360.

Here's an excerpt:

"In just two weeks, Xbox 360 will extend its industry lead with the year's most anticipated game launch, GTA IV. Launching April 29, GTA IV will be coming to Xbox 360 on day one. GTA IV will feature the first ever online multiplayer for the franchise and Xbox 360 is also the only place you can earn GTA IV Achievements and increase your gamerscore.

Starting this fall, only Xbox 360 owners will have access to exclusive GTA IV episodic content. Whether it's the results of online polls or data from pre-sells, consumers have made it clear that the benefits of Xbox LIVE and exclusive access to GTA IV episodic content are making Xbox 360 the chosen place to play GTA IV."

Forget Soccer, For A Real Workout Play Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games

The Edmonton Journal has a good article up on the presumed health benefits of using the Wii. Greg Chin, a teacher at Archbishop Joseph MacNeil, decided to compare simulated sports activities on Wii, compared to traditional forms of exercise.

The results? Some of his students were able to achieve a sustained heart rate of 170 beats per minutes, a mere 10 beats away from their target zone of 180.

It's a fun read, and you should check out the video clip at the bottom of the article. Some of those kids really are working up a sweat, whew!!

If you couldn't tell by watching my gamer tag I've been playing a lot of Lost Odyssey lately, and now Major Nelson is reporting new DCL is available (only 200 MS points).  

Three new items including;
  • "Memory Lamp" - Allows you to watch the past event scenes all over again
  • "Shattered Bond" - An antique item that will bring back the memory of a forgotten dream
  • "Killer Machine" - A specialized ring for fighting against magic-powered weapon

'Rock Band Wrist' Is The New Nintendo Thumb

Having grown up with video games, I can truthfully say I've had my fair share of sore thumbs and cramped wrists from all-night gaming marathons. Back in 1980s we used to call these symptoms the "Nintendo Thumb" (a.k.a. Nintendinitis). For me, the cramps were a symbol of triumph, a proud battle wound from another labourious hardcore gaming session.

Well, thanks to Rock Band, gaming cramps are even easier to achieve!

Luckily, Peter Keir, a kinesiologist at McMaster University, is here to remind us that we need to be aware of bodies, and to take "breaks to avoid repetitive tendon or eye strain injuries". Thanks Peter, I'll keep that in mind next time I'm rocking out to The Hand That Feeds!

Wii Buy Consoles, Not Games

Ah, the Wii. While developers are busy debating whether the console is merely a fad, or a true next gen system, Canadians are still snapping up the great white machine in record numbers.

But while console sales are red hot, it seems Wii software isn't fairing so well here. According to an article posted yesterday on The Globe And Mail website, the real (and persistent!) problem it is that Wii owners are lovin' their Nintendo published games, and haven't the same liking to 3rd party software. It's such a shame really. There are plenty of great 3rd party titles out there being ignored (I'm looking at you No More Heroes & Bully.)

But hey, at least we're all snug and cozy with Capcom. Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles both million sellers? Yes, I think so.

Best Buy Canada Hosts 'Raid-Gone-Wrong', Thug Attire Optional

According to this, Best Buy Canada and Xbox Canada are joining forces for the launch of GTA IV with some midnight madness and 'raid-gone-wrong' live theatre action. Attendees will also have a chance to experience the thrills and chills of of Liberty City first-hand, with a number of themed interactive activities planned.

The best part? According to the press release, "the first 100 gamers in line at each location will be eligible to win one of 5 Limited Edition Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox 360 consoles."

The five Best Buy Canada locations that will open for midnight madness events from midnight until 2 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28 include:

NextGen Player Contest Rules

To provide fair and equal chance of winning to all NextGen Player readers, the following are the Official Rules for all contests on NextGen Player.


1. Eligibility

To be eligible to win the prize(s) as indicated, entrants must correctly answer a skill-testing question before a prize is awarded, as indicated in the contest announcement post.

Please review each contest for regional and age limitations, by default all winners must be 18 years of age or older and live in Canada, unless otherwise stated and/or posted. NextGen Player is not responsible if you enter a contest and are not eligible to win, NextGen Player is not required to award any prizes forfeited by the chosen winner(s).

Employees, Contributors, Officers, and Directors (including immediate family members and members of the same household) of NextGen Player are not eligible to win contests.

2. Entering Contests and Choosing and Contacting Winners

Winners chosen at random:
Contest winner(s) will be chosen at random based on Contest Rules and contacted via the Method indicated in the contest announcement post.

If stated in the contest announcement post, email subscriber to the NextGen Player email feed must provide a valid and confirmed email address on the NextGen Player email subscription form. NextGen Player is not responsible for and will not consider incomplete or incorrect entries, or email addresses submitted but not received by NextGen Player for any reason, as potential contest winners.

Winners of all contests will be contacted at the email address used to subscribe to the NextGen Player email feed, or by the Method indicated in the contest announcement post, and the person receiving and replying to the winner announcement notice will be considered the winner unless they specify another person within the reply email as the winner. NextGen Player, or its contest partner, will mail the contest prize to the address supplied by the recipient of the winner announcement email.

Only one entry per email address will be considered for contest entry, unless multiple entries are specifically allowed in the contest posting. No person may enter any contest more than once using multiple email addresses.

Claiming of prizes requires an email response to NextGen Player from the winning sender email address within 15 calendar days of being notified of winning at the email address used to enter. Failure to respond shall mean that the winner forfeits the prize. NextGen Player is not required to award elsewhere any prizes forfeited by the chosen winner(s).

3. Submission of text or other content for Contests

By submitting any information to NextGen Player, you hereby grant to NextGen Player and its affiliates and assigns, an irrevocable, perpetual and royalty-free right to use, reproduce, edit, display, transmit, prepare derivative works of, modify, publish and otherwise make use of the submitted information in any and all media, whether now known or hereinafter created, throughout the world and for any purpose.

By submitting any information to NextGen Player, you hereby represent and warrant that the submitted information does not and shall not infringe on any copyright, any rights of privacy or publicity of any person, or any other right of any third party, and you have the right to grant any and all rights and licenses granted to NextGen Player herein, including but not limited to all necessary rights under copyright, free and clear of any claims or encumbrances;

You acknowledge and agree that NextGen Player shall have no obligation to post, display or otherwise make publicly available any information submitted by you, and may, in its sole and unfettered discretion, remove, edit, modify or delete any information that you submit to NextGen Player;

You hereby agree to hold NextGen Player and its affiliates and sponsors and assigns harmless from and against, and hereby waive any right to pursue, any claims of any nature arising in connection with the inclusion in, publication via or display on NextGen Player, or any other use authorized under these Terms, of any information submitted to NextGen Player by you;

Information submitted by you to NextGen Player shall be the property of NextGen Player, and NextGen Player shall have no obligation to preserve, return or otherwise make available to you or others any information so submitted.

4. Awarding Prizes

Winners are solely responsible for all taxes and/or fees that may be incurred.

Each prize winner must supply NextGen Player with his/her legal name, mailing address, birth date, daytime and nighttime telephone numbers.

Winners may not request substitutions of prize winnings. All winners are solely responsible for any and all taxes and/or fees, and all such additional costs that may be incurred.

Neither NextGen Player, NextGen Player sponsors, nor employees of NextGen Player or sponsors may be held liable for any warranty, costs, damage, injury, or any other claims incurred as a result of usage of any winners of a prize once possession has been taken of the product by winner. NextGen Player is not liable for any loss arising out of or in connection with or resulting from any contest promoted by NextGen Player.

If the specified prize becomes unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances, NextGen Player may, at their sole discretion, substitute a prize of like or equal value.

5. General

By entering the contest, entrants agree to read, abide and be bound by the Official Rules, including all eligibility requirements, and by the decisions of the Sponsors, made in its sole discretion, which shall be final and binding in all matters relating to the contest. Entrants who have not complied with the Official Rules are subject to disqualification.

For Facebook and Twitter contests, entrants must enter using the official NextGen Player Twitter account @NextGenPlayer, Facebook Fan Page NextGen Player, or on the Editor's Facebook wall.

For residents of Quebec, any litigation respecting the conduct or organization of a publicity contest may be submitted to the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux for a ruling. Any litigation respecting the awarding of a prize may be submitted to the Régie only for the purpose of helping the parties reach a settlement.
